  1. This was near Osea Road. It was cruelly cold. As the tide rose, the ice creaked and groaned – just like Scott of the Antarctic! I was about 14 and rowed for my school on the Thames at Barnes. As we lifted the eights out of the water, a film of ice formed on the bottom of the boat. It was considered a badge of honour to wear shorts.
