  1. Five of these German railbuses were delivered to British Railways in 1958. They were built by Waggon und Maschinenbau and two ran on the Maldon and Braintree branch lines. They were the height of luxury and you could sit right at the front by the driver’s cab. I recall that the driver had to keep his left elbow on on the safety cutout switch (like a dead man’s handle) and on several occasions, a big elastic band kept the switch held down. Being experimental and non-standard they were withdrawn in 1967, replaced by diesel railcars. I believe one has been preserved.
