Q1 at Nine Elms depot
Southern Railway/Southern Region class Q1, no. 33017. 40 of these locos were built in the second world war to handle freight trains on the southern Railway. Designed by Bulleid, they were powerful, if unusual-looking locomotives. We knew them as ‘coffee pots’, due to their unusual shape and there was generally one to be seen at Clapham Junction pulling a milk train or shunting. Dad took this at Nine Elms Depot which was situated not far from Waterloo station. 33017 was withdrawn in 1964 and cut up. 33001 is preserved at York Railway Museum.
