  1. ‘Elders Fyffes’ was one of 30 Merchant Navy Pacifics, designed by O.V.S. Bulleid and built in 1945. They engines originally had an air-smoothed casing and many innovative design features, not all of them successful. We called them ‘spam cans’ and spent many happy hours on Clapham Junction station watching them tear through with West Country expresses. My secondary school was next to the railway, so every lunchtime was passed, notebook in hand, by the railway fence. Dad took this photo at Nine Elms depot, on a photographic club outing. 35016 was withdrawn and cut up in 1965, with many years of life left.
