I was one of a party from TS Sheffield, Sea Cadet Corps, age 14 in 1963. We joined Memory at Maldon, ferried across to her by John Kemp. By late afternoon I was at the wheel steering Memory out on the Blackwater River and not quite believing it; I could say this was my first trip to sea. I was completely in awe of skipper John Kemp and equally so of the wonderful Jane Benham. Just a marvellous experience and I think of it often; we have been holidaying in Suffolk for many years now and visiting Felixtowe , Harwich and the Suffolk coast always bring back memories.
Hi David. Thanks for your comment. My dad (John Kemp) always thought very highly of the Sheffield Sea Cadets. I remember the redoubtable Cdr George Lill very well. What a guy. I think the last time I saw him was at Jane Benham’s funeral, about 1992.
